For improved visibility and security

The human eye can see colours with wavelengths ranging from approx. 400 nanometres (violet) to 700 nanometres (red). However, the human eye response is most sensitive to colours in the mid-range - around 555 nanometres. Light with this wavelength is green, so green is the colour most visible to humans.
